Norman Watt-Roy proved, yet again, that he's the finest bass player the UK has ever produced. Mick Talbot on keyboards filled the band sound out nicely. It's another Essex boy, the excellent Steve 'West' Weston, who was brilliant. I thought they would play one Who number, but I didn't know the one number Wilko chose. Yes he did his usual darting around the stage, & some audience members seemed amazed that he could actually move. Just a Tele plugged into an amp with a curly lead. Wilko & his band played the first 30 minutes, 6 numbers straight off, not even a pause for breath between songs. Well I'm pleased to report that Wilko seemed as alive as ever on Tuesday. Clearly he's an awkward bugger who likes to prove doctors wrong. And now it's 2014 & he's still not dead! So he's recorded an album with Roger Daltrey, & they're playing a gig at Shepherds Bush Empire next month to promote it. The farewell gig tickets sold out in no time at all, & those of us who have supported Wilko for years/decades didn't get a look in, with a huge demand for tickets.īut he didn't die as expected, & there are a few YouTube clips of him turning up at gigs last year by his former bass player, Norman Watt-Roy & playing a few songs. He elected not to undergo treatment, & he set up a few farewell gigs last year in the fairly certain knowledge that he'd be dead before 2013 was over. Wilko fans will be aware that he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a year or so ago. ![]()
